ATLAS architecture is more than a client-server infrastructure. Its structure makes it easy to distribute the sets of data in different servers, to balance the load of request and find the fastest repository to get the data from.
ATLAS can handle different types of datasets, such for example:
ATLAS maintans a db with all the information linked together:
All those datasets (but the spatialDb) can be spreaded wide all over the internet/intranet, this guarantees the fastest speed up connection possible.
What the user experiences
User connects to the main web site, and after a log in, he sees all the dataset in his desktop.
What the server does
The Main server, once received the user log in, searches in all its repository the server that offers the faster connection to the client, and create a connection between them in order to provide the dataset in the fastest way possible.
The data server has its own consistency: it can provide every type of data, and for dedicated users, it can be installed in the LAN of the client accessing the data.
